July · 98° and muggy

When the air can’t keep up.

Four-state summers are long and humid. An air conditioner that is low on charge, has a weak capacitor or a dirty coil will run all afternoon and still leave the house sticky.

  • Warm air from the vents
  • Outdoor unit humming but not running
  • Ice on the lines or coil
  • Water around the indoor unit

January · 12° and falling

When the heat won’t come on.

Cold snaps and ice storms find every weak furnace and tired heat pump. A fall check on the burners, flame sensor, venting and backup heat is the best insurance there is.

  • Furnace lights, then shuts off
  • Heat pump blowing cool air
  • Backup heat running all the time
  • Odd smells or noises at start-up

Local knowledge

Built for both ends of the year.

Here a system does not get an easy season. Summers stretch from May into September with heat and humidity that keep air conditioners running for hours, and winter brings cold snaps and ice storms that test furnaces and heat pumps in the same week.

Housing ranges from 1890s homes in Joplin’s Murphysburg district and Carthage’s Victorian streets to the thousands of Joplin homes rebuilt after the 2011 tornado, many of whose systems are now past ten years old. Each needs a different conversation.

Straight answers

Heating & air questions, answered.

How do I know whether to repair or replace my air conditioner?

Repair usually makes sense when the system is under about 10 to 12 years old and the fix is a normal wear part. Replacement makes more sense when it is older, the repair is a major part such as the compressor or coil, or it uses R-22 refrigerant.

Do heat pumps work in Joplin winters?

Yes. The four-state area has relatively mild winters, and a modern heat pump heats efficiently through most of the season, with backup heat for the coldest nights.

How often should I have my heating and air system serviced?

Once a year for each system: the air conditioner in spring and the furnace in fall. Heat pumps run year-round, so twice a year is the usual advice.

Why does my house feel clammy even though the AC is running?

The air conditioner is cooling but not removing enough moisture. The usual causes are an oversized unit that shuts off too quickly, a fan set to ON instead of AUTO, or too much airflow.

My system uses R-22. What does that mean for me?

R-22 (Freon) has not been produced or imported in the U.S. since 2020, so it is available only from recycled and stockpiled supplies, which makes refrigerant repairs expensive.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the house right away with everyone in it. Don’t flip light switches, use the phone inside, or start a car in an attached garage.
